Treasure Valley iCan Bike Camp
A Bike Camp for Individuals with Disabilities
HOW IT WORKS
From June 6-10th, iCan Shine’s iCan Bike program will be in Meridian, Idaho to teach individuals with various disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become a lifelong independent rider!
iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days (M – F) whereby they are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters”.
Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week is concluded with a touching and inspiring award ceremony!
HOW TO REGISTER
Registration opens March 1st and will be taken on a first come first serve basis. The cost is $149 for TVDSA Members or $199 for non-members (returning riders receive $25 discount). Payment in full is required to secure a slot. Registration will close once all slots are filled. Registration forms are available online at: http://icanshine.org/boise-id/.
iCan Bike riders are children ages 8 and up, teens and adults who have a diagnosed disability but are able to walk without assistive devices and sidestep from side to side.
Parents, teachers and therapists describe the results as INCREDIBLE. Over the past two years 80% of riders learned to ride a conventional bike independently by the end of the 5-day camp. Success in learning to ride a bicycle is a major accomplishment. Learning to ride builds confidence and an improved self-image.
VOLUNTEERS ALSO NEEDED
They need 100 volunteers to spot and provide encouragement for riders. If you know anyone at least 16 years of age, that can physically walk fast/jog along with a rider, please share this opportunity with them. Volunteer forms can also be found on the website: http://icanshine.org/boise-id/.
